A HYPNOSIS EXPERIMENT- SCIENTIFIC SHORT FICTION AND ROMANCE

This post was featured on Blogadda.com 's WOW post (Nov 8, 2013)

Three hours past midnight, all windows open, with the wind splitting the white-off white stained curtains and blowing away papers scattered all around from a dot-matrix printer continuously screeching from left to right. A dim incandescent bulb crying to glow and at the corner of that messy room was Ryan Bailey sitting, trying to work on some molecular structures and docking them on his laptop. He looked weak, with untidy dress, uncombed hair and improperly trimmed beard. Ryan was a professor of experimental medicine at Touchstone Medical University, a post Doctorate fellowship in neuropsycho-pharmacology, one who bagged all the gold medals in his undergraduate as well as post graduate. It had been his dream project to develop an unique drug molecule, which could partially put a person to sleep, yet play with his unconscious mind by hypnotizing an individual and eliminate the drug from the body without any traces.

He has been working in this research project for the last 6 years, back from his Ph.D days and success was nearing. Though he was married 8 yrs back, he was more dedicated to his research work and romance got buried deep within leaving behind no time for his beautiful wife Janet Bailey, who was a Chief Gynecologist at Touchstone Medical University Hospital. They both were undergraduate class mates and a love story had developed between them. Though Ryan and Janet were separated by destiny to pursue masters in different Med schools, they both met each other at a reunion, following which Ryan proposed Janet. Their love story went smooth and they got married the following winter, But, soon Ryan started getting more involved in his research. His lab became his home, his laptop was his world and some times there had been weeks together where Ryan hadn't met Janet, yet conversations used to happen over his mobile. On the other side Janet was busy as well, conducing deliveries and advising new mothers on handling children, even though she didn't conceive through Ryan. She loved Ryan fully and supported him in his research work, but couldn't tell him much about it.

The drug molecule was ready, and in-silico (computer based study done to assess drug action) studies showed a positive result, following which Ryan conducted a small toxicology study in a group of rodents to study about dosing and toxicity of the molecule. His planning was so perfect that all the clinical studies were perfect and soon he was able to make it into an injectable form. There was one issue that Ryan was worried about - the drug being misused and denied sharing any details with others. Weeks later he was desperate to try the drug on a human volunteer, but scared, so he decided to inform Janet and try the drug on himself, while she could record the video or provide any medical emergence if needed.

Ryan was in his glass cabin, where he decided self inject the drug and carry out his experiment. But, Janet didn't want Ryan to experiment the drug on him, and decided to speak to him as he prepared a set of recorded questioners, which the tape recorder would ask him, while he would be video taped for the same.
In a nervous tone Janet started " so dear, all done with your preparations ?? "
There was silence around. She again spoke " How confident are you on your molecule, what if something goes wrong, whom will I live for ??"
Ryan was trying to focus on his checklist, yet replied " don't worry dear, I trust in you"
Swallowing a lump of saliva, she again interrupted " How long would you be self hypnotized ??"
For which he replied " Just 30 minutes dear" "and Promise me dear, even if anything happens to me, your not telling about my research to any one"
Janet remained silent, "but why?????"
Shhhhh..!!!!

He was all set to perform the experiment, he pecked a kiss to Janet, locked his glass seethrough cabin checked the emergency kit, kept his mobile phone next to the bed, started the audio player and video recorder, then injected an intravenous cannula. All set, he took a deep breath and infused the drug into his own body. Though Janet was  seated outside, she was carefully seeing him, as he went into sleep. Along side she was monitoring his Heart rate, Oxygen saturation and blood pressure very carefully.

The first question started "what do you see, Do you know where are you now ? "
Ryan (exressionless, with  eyes open and raised eyebrows) was initially lost, and then replied " I'm not sure where I am, but I can see my self around in a white dress, lost midst the clouds "
His facial expressions changed and he uttered " I can see my Janet come, beautifully dressed in a white gown, but she's looking sad over some thing".
" Is it our marriage day I asked her"
" She isn't responding to me "
" Janet .... Janet " "Listen to me"...
" I can see her move away "..
" Janet".... Listen to me ... "What wrong did I do....?"  ":Janet I love you"... " You have been everything to me" Listen to me....
She is running away from me....
" Oh wait.. Janet... there is an Train coming" "slow down...."  "Listen to me"...  " I love you... "Slow down at least now....I'm sorry..."
From nowhere betwixt the clouds the train hits her...
"Janet.... Oh, why did you do this to yourself... why have you left me alone.. why have you done this ..... now there is none for me....Janet pls come back" He was literally crying

Standing outside was Janet, who had tears in her eyes seeing her husband actually speak about her and his love even in his unconscious state of mind.
Ryan started shouting loudly " Now that you have gone, I'm gonna join you as well, take me alone, I'm gonna sacrifice my self for you....." The monitors showed altered parameters and an alarm started blinking... Janet had no other option but to try getting into the cabin and bring him back to consciousness. She tried opening the door of the cabin and it wasn't opening it was jammed.. there was no way she could break that toughened glass. She had promised him not to tell this thing to anyone.

She looked through the glass cabin and found his phone next to him as he was slurring some meaningless words. She decided to distract him as there were only some 10 minutes left for him to recover from the drug. She decided to start calling on his phone, so she picked up her phone and started with the first call.. and was able to hear the phone bell ring till outside. She cut it and called again, called again, again and again... again and again... 38 missed calls and all of a sudden Ryan woke up with with sweats, his footsteps weren't coordinating, using the inner lock he opened the cabin and fell down unconscious. Janet immediately rushed him to the bed, connected the monitors and started him with atropine, I.V fluids and other emergency drugs and stabilized him. He soon regained his consciousness, but was exhausted... the video recorder was still recording.. an hour later he called Janet and started scolding her for disrupting his study, following which she broke down into tears and left his cabin.
A couple of hours later he was completely stabilized, and when he picked up his phone, he saw 38 missed calls from Janet in 10 minutes, and wondered what was going on... He tried calling her, and she didn't pick.. He was not sure what to do and immediately picked up the video recorder and re-winded the video actually look at what had happened and how Janet saved him. He was lethargic, didn't know what to do and immediately took a cab and rushed home.

Upon reaching home, Janet was there... He ran towards her and tried hugging her, she pushed him away.. but, Ryan didn't give up, he held her tight and wispered in her ear " guess what... your 38 missed calls in 10 minutes saved my life"
" I don't have  words to tell,  how grateful I am to have a wife like you"
She slapped him tight and said " your'e such an asshole.... :-) at least now you realized not to try it on your self. it was completely insane you idiot... I tried telling you, and you weren't ready to even listen to me... To hell with you now..."
Ryan : Listen Janet " Listen, I have seen the video...., I'm sorry" Trust me I love you... I promise not to leave you"
Janet's heart was pounding to forgive him,  as she moved towards her room, yet she took this as an opportunity to see how much he loves her
And all of a sudden Ryan collapses and falls to the ground with a thud.
Janet rushes back to Ryan...
"Ryan... Ryan... open your eyes"
Janet tried to stay calm as she was looking for some clinical symptoms..
and then all of a sudden Ryan woke up and hugged her tightly and planted a kiss.. This was passionate... He carried her over to the room and closed the door...

and then 9 months later.. Janet finally delivered a baby, while Ryan published his work and applied for patent..

Every time he thinks about the incident, he thinks about how 38 missed calls in 10 minutes saved his life
